Webinar: A deep dive into the PhD – and what comes next?

UCD Energy Institute brings together researchers from a wide range of academic disciplines to tackle the challenges associated with the decarbonisation of energy. Focusing on energy systems, energy management, and energy in society, we drive Ireland’s position as a world leader in the integration of renewable energy. Energy systems research, primarily carried out through the Energy Systems Integration Partnership Programme (ESIPP), focuses on the decarbonisation of our energy systems and the integration of electricity, gas, and water systems. The Energy Systems Integration approach considers the relationships among electricity, thermal, water and fuel systems and data and information networks to ensure optimal integration and inter-operability across the entire energy system spectrum.

This online event will give a brief introduction to some ongoing research of PhD students in UCD Energy institute, followed by a panel discussion featuring former PhD students who are now applying their skills to different roles. This session will provide insights into some of the key skills, motivations and challenges associated with doing a PhD in the area of energy, and bringing this expertise to life after a PhD. If you have ever googled “is a PhD in the energy domain worth it” this is the event for you.

Title: A deep dive into the PhD in energy – and what comes next?

Abstract:

What motivates people to do a PhD? Is it the willingness to improve their career prospects or is it some inner passion for research? When is the right time to commit yourself into that 4- 5 years mysterious adventure?  These are some of the many questions that can cross our minds at the time of deciding if we want to dive into a PhD programme. From the experience of many, it can be an amazing trip (definitely, a life changing one) which does not come without its ‘blues’. Join us during this panel session to explore the experiences of some of UCD Energy Institute alumni and solve the million-euro question: ‘is it worth it?’

Format: 4 speakers with a 5-minutes intro each, followed by a Q&A session (20’?)

  • Killian McKenna, NREL
  • Solène Goy, SEAI
  • Lisa Ruttledge, FoodMarble
