Richard O Hegarty is a Research Engineer interested in the sustainable design, construction and operation buildings. A multidisciplinary research background of energy analysis, material science and structural mechanics provided the foundations for him to pursue this field of research. Richard holds a BE in Civil Engineering from UCD, an MSc in Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering from TCD and a PhD in Façade Engineering, also from TCD. He has worked closely with a number of industry partners, including IES, Firebird, Techrete and Ecocem and has published first tier journals articles as first author in a range of building-related topics including energy efficiency, renewable energy, concrete technology and structural mechanics. Currently, he is working part-time as a postdoctoral researcher on an SEAI funded project (nZEB101) focused on the assessment of near zero energy buildings. Richard also works for Techrete Ltd (a global leader in architectural precast concrete) as R&D manager. At Techrete he conducts research on advanced concrete mix development, batching plant operations and the management and recycling of waste products.
