The Energy Institute is saddened to hear of the passing of Dr Eddie O’Connor
The Energy Institute community was extremely saddened to learn of the passing of Dr Eddie O’Connor. Eddie was a global pioneer in the field of renewable energy, advocating for renewable energy and a supergrid for Europe.
Among his many appointments, Eddie served as an Adjunct Professor at the Energy Institute.
A former ESB engineer and chief executive of Bord na Móna, over his remarkable career, he founded Airtricity and was its chief executive for 20 years, and later went on to co-found Mainstream Renewables and SuperNode.
Eddie was a UCD graduate and the recipient of an Honorary Doctorate of Science from UCD as well as the UCD Foundation Day Medal.
Professor Andrew Keane, Director of the Energy Institute, paid tribute to Eddie, saying “With Eddie’s passing, we have lost a visionary leader in renewable energy. We will miss him as a friend and colleague and more widely the energy sector has lost one of its great visionary leaders. Eddie was a valued Adjunct Professor at the Energy Institute and our students were fortunate to benefit from Eddie’s insight and passion for engineering and tackling the climate crisis. He was always generous with his time for meeting students, encouraging them in their progress as student engineers. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time. “
May he rest in peace.
